A recently released study on the new platforms mobile developers plan to support in 2011 puts on full display the increasing fragmentation of the smartphone market. Millennial Media, a Baltimore-based ad network, teamed with Digiday and an analyst from Stifel Nicolaus to survey app developers, publishers, and advertisers about their outlook on development practices for 2011.

When asked which new platforms they planned to develop on in 2011:

29% of publishers said Android

20% of publishers said Windows Phone 7 and iPad (dead heat)

8% of publishers said iPhone

6% and 4%, respectively, said Symbian and Palm webOS

The study also found that when app developers and advertisers consider which mobile platform(s) to support, they weigh reach, demographics, branding, ease of use, and increased sales potential. Nearly 31% of publishers are confident that their apps will increase in revenue 100% or more in 2011. Another 17% anticipate growth of 50% or more.
