PointAbout’s Favorite iOS 5 Features

Here at PointAbout HQ, all the buzz this week has been about Apple’s WWDC and the upcoming release of iOS5, due in the fall.

One of the most anticipated features of iOS5 for us is integration of Twitter within apps, which will make it super easy to blast those PointAbout tweets from our iOS devices. iOS5 will also cut the USB cord altogether, taking the headache out of syncing iOS devices. Pointabout iOS developer Nitin Alabur had this to say, “Wireless syncing saves a lot of headache. Oftentimes, I have to sync both the iPad and iPhone with my Mac in order to get an app on both the devices, unless I download separately on both the devices.”

The inclusion of over-the-air technology, which was a native feature in Google’s Android, BlackBerry’s OS 5 and Windows Phone 7, allows device owners to activate and set up new devices without the need for a PC. Free software updates can be downloaded directly to devices for seamless upgrades, not to mention automatic iTunes syncing.

Last but not least is perhaps the biggest announcement to come out of WWDC – iCloud. iCloud keeps emails, contacts, calendars, and music fully synced across all devices. The thought of having web-based accessible storage for everything from apps to music to content to calendars was once unimaginable. With the introduction of iCloud and services like it, the potential to store and seamlessly update any of your Apple devices automatically will soon be a step closer to reality.

While our office is filled with ample mobile devices and we all have our favorites, it’s interesting to watch these new technologies unfold across the various platforms.
