PointAbout in Tech Cocktail: The West Coast Deal

« Return to previous page.

Glen Hellman, angel investor, serial entrepreneur, and Tech Cocktail contributor, featured PointAbout and AppMakr’s quest for VC money in a recent article about the DC tech scene.

It seems that more than a few startups out there seeking funding in DC/VA/MD are low-balled on valuations or struggling to raise capital. As Hellman puts it, “We’re not fashion trendsetters, and we’re not the big idea, swing-for-the-fences capital of the entrepreneurial-world-shakers. Let’s face it, we may have put a man on the moon, but we didn’t get your grandma to use Facebook.”

The good news for start-ups and tech companies based here is that there are a number of entrenched, forward-thinking tech companies in the area that have shown they can be major players in their field, no matter whether they’re in California or Kalamazoo. Baltimore-based Millenial Media, for example, closed a $27.5 million equity round that was announced early in 2011. And while our CEO Daniel Odio has been vocal about the advantages of raising capital on the west coast as opposed to the east, there are also advantages to having our Professional Services arm nestled between the Dulles Technology Corridor and the heart of the federal government.
