IDC, a technology research company, says Google will be crowned king of mobile internet display ads in 2011. Today, Google has a market share of 59% of the total spending, which includes display and search advertising; Apple sits at second place with an 8% market share. Needless to say, Google is the dominant force in mobile search advertising (with an ad revenue market share of over 90%).

When singling out mobile Internet display ads, Google and Apple are tied with 19% market share. According to IDC’s Karsten Weide, Google will outpace Apple in mobile display advertising in the coming years, due to the expected and continuous flood of Android devices in the coming years. Google has access to all major networks, and Google’s AdMob runs ads on both the iPhone and Android devices. Apple’s iAd, on the other hand, only serves ads on iOS devices.

Overall, IDC is predicting a 5% increase in marketers’ total online advertising budgets in 2011; this year marketers spent close to 3% of their total online ad budgets on mobile. Not only is mobile advertising growing and becoming an effective vehicle for brands and marketers, mobile itself has seen exponential growth. Mobile devices and OSes are becoming more sophisticated and swifter, carriers are being forced to keep up with the consumer demand by offering competitive deals, and developers have a multitude of platforms for which to develop.
