The second quarter held true to predictions and expectations; consumer Smartphone sales accounted for 19% (up 51% from Q2 2009) of worldwide mobile device sales, which totaled 325.6 million units (a 13.8% increase from Q2 2009) in the Q2 2010, according to a report by Gartner, Inc.
The report also pointed out a few changes and shifts in the top 10 mobile device manufacturers. Nokia remained in the lead with a total of 111.5 million units sold and a share of 34.2%. HTC made a debut and landed at number 8 in the top 10 worldwide rankings. In the second quarter, the manufacturer sold 5.9 million units, which helped drive the 139.1% year-over-year growth. RIM, the fourth largest brand, ended the quarter with a 3.4% share, selling 11.2 million units. Apple remained in 7th place with sales that reached 8.7 million units, giving the company a 14.2% slice of the Smartphone market.
With the explosion of the Android OS, the Smartphone operating system market was somewhat shaken up. The top 4 OS vendors in Q2 were Symbian, RIM, Android, which overtook Appleās iOS, who landed the 4th place slot. All four vendors displayed growth, accounting for 91% of the worldwide Smartphone OS market (up 6% year-over-year).
