Report: Tiered data plans are a win for (most) consumers

« Return to previous page.

The topic of data usage in the U.S. is hugely popular and it’s driving carriers to restructure their subscriptions and start offering tiered data plans.
Recently, The Nielsen Company analyzed some 60,000 phone bills they’ve continuously collected in order to reveal how much data is consumed by each customer every month, regardless of metered or unlimited plans.  Nielsen found that there was an approximate 230% increase in data usage (year-over-year), from 2009 to 2010.  During the first quarter of 2009 and 2010, the average data consumption was about 90MB and 298MB per month, respectively.   Although there was an increase, about a third of Smartphone subscribers used less than 1 MB of data per month in 2009, while that number dropped to a quarter in 2010, due to the increase in the utility of the devices and available applications.  According to Nielsen, those numbers reflect that roughly 20 million current Smartphone users barely use data.
Tiered data plans just might be the answer. Nielsen concluded that the vast majority or 99% (according to the 60,000 phone bills that were collected and analyzed) of Smartphone subscribers could benefit from new data plans.  Not only that, far less data will be consumed.
